Law Enforcement has existed in this area since the turn of the century when International Falls was known as the village of Koochiching. In September, 1910 the citizens adopted a Home Rule Charter and the village of Koochiching formally became the City of International Falls. Chapter eight of the charter provided for creation of a police department.
From our meager beginnings, the International Falls Police Department today is a professional agency committed to provide the citizens of International Falls with delivery of law enforcement and community-oriented police services.
The International Falls Police Department's ten full-time personnel include a Chief of Police, Administrative Assistant, four Shift Commanders (Sergeants), and six patrol officers. Nine fully licensed part-time officers supplement our ranks. Our shift scheduling allows for multiple officer coverage around the clock. Our police department serves approximately 6,500 residents, but that number increases dramatically during the summer months due to tourism, increased international commerce through our local port of entry, and returning residents who winter in warmer climates.
In 1981, the International Falls Police Department moved into new quarters at the Joint Law Enforcement Center located at 715 4th Street. We share these quarters with the Koochiching County Sheriff's Department.
The quality of life in International Falls is top-notch, and the police department plays an important role in maintaining this great environment. Our citizens enjoy a very low crime rate and our city streets and parks are safe and clean. To learn more about our department, we invite you to browse the provided page links. |
