E-bikes, what is and isn't legal MN State Statute 169.011. Here’s what you need to know ⬇️ ✅ E-bike basics • Must have 2-3 wheels, fully operable pedals, a saddle, and a motor output of no more than 750 watts. • Minnesota Statute 169.011 classifies e-bikes into three categories based on maximum speed and how the electric assist functions (Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3). • Riders must be 15+ years old. (Under 18 years old must wear a helmet) • E-bikes may only carry as many people as the bike was designed for. • Riders must yield to pedestrians and follow all posted signs and regulations. ✅ Where you can ride • Class 1 and 2 e-bikes (up to 20 mph) are permitted where traditional bicycles are allowed. • Class 3 e-bikes (up to 28 mph) cannot be operated on bicycle paths, trails or shared-use facilities with the motor engaged. 🚫 E-motos are not e-bikes! Motorcycles, motorized bicycles, and off-highway motorcycles that have electric motors, but do not have operable pedals, are not considered e-bikes. They are prohibited from trails, sidewalks, and park areas. ... See MoreSee Less
Basically, all cyclists have the same rights AND responsibilities as vehicles. Yes, you have a right to the lane. And yes, you need to follow all traffic laws. And stay off the sidewalks, they are for pedestrians.
All I see is jokes about a motorized bike whats next
So are class 3 allowed on road then
Clowns at that run new jersey says those are all the same. lmao
I have an e-bike, I ride almost daily. I wear a helmet, bright visible clothing, have a flashing red light on the back, a headlight on the front, obey the traffic laws, use the assist when appropriate(don’t speed )AND I have almost been hit twice this year by cars that don’t move over. Don’t tell me you can’t SEE me!!!! The courtesy goes both ways-for bikers and cars!
Normally I don't post, but I feel the need to do so. I have a 3 wheel e-bike. I realize I'm suppose to use the side of the road next to the sidewalk. There's not enough room. The pot holes, cracks and man holes. I will use the sidewalk and give pedestrians the right of ways as well as drivers.
There is a huge problem here that people on e-bikes are lacking in safe transportation with both architecture and cars. Going down both main highways where 90% of what everyone needs is at is impossible on a bike if we have to be on the road. It's even just hard to get to the bike/pedestrian path that goes down Highway 11 and to crosswalk indicators that are in the grass 20 ft away from the road. The tarred path down Highway 53 cars blow right past the crosswalks, and are blocking the sidewalk when on driveways leaving businesses. I understand the problem that mostly children are causing on e-bikes, and this is informative to their parents (if they even care), but you need to be more focused on informing cars of the law there, too.
Thank you for the clarification. Not many people know this.
That just shows ppl don’t pay attention to ppl on bikes.
Glad you didn’t get hit by a car.
Be safe Betsy!
Are scooters illegal too?
Two items: Many vehicle drivers believe a person on a bicycle has no legal right to space on the road...FALSE, see below. SECOND: Law requires bicycles passing another bicycle or pedestrian to properly announce themselves. e- bikes are so quiet, unannounced passing is VERY dangerous. Non pedal bikes should be considered motor bikes and the driver licensed. I have seen non pedalling very young youth improperly riding, riding double, not announceing passing. ALL VERY DANGEROUS. There is also a GREAT NEED for proper trail/road signage displaying cycling routes and educating vehicle drivers to share the road. SIGNAGE =EDUCATION=SAFETY. I have talked to Co Hway Engineer and MnDOT Engineers, No to little action to improve signage safety. I cycle 1200-1600 miles a summer locally. Have had numerous near misses and one direct rear end hit on the St hwy. Safety for all needs IMPROVEMENT !!!!!! 2025 Minnesota Statutes
169.222 OPERATION OF BICYCLE.
Subdivision 1.Traffic laws apply. (a) Every person operating a bicycle has all of the rights and duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle ......... (e) An individual operating a bicycle or other vehicle on a bikeway must (1) give an audible signal a safe distance prior to overtaking a bicycle or individual, (2) leave a safe clearance distance when overtaking a bicycle or individual proceeding in the same direction, and (3) maintain clearance until safely past the overtaken bicycle or individual.
It’s only illegal if you can catch me on one of those 2 wheeled hellcats.

Only under 18 years old has to wear a helmet if it is a class 3 e bike otherwise there is no statewide helmet mandate on for standard e bike riders of class 1 and class 2 size e bikes. They have been trying to pass the bill to require all e bike riders under 18 regardless of size of e bike to wear a helmet but it never passed so only class 3 e bikes are requiring anyone under 18 to wear a helmet but class 1 and class 2 you do not need a helmet but it is strongly recommended. You do have to be minimum 15 years old to ride any of the classes of e bikes I also think a helmet should be a requirement for anyone under 18 regardless of e bike size but unfortunately it isn't like that yet. I know im going to enforce it and make sure no one under 18 is renting out without a helmet anymore. I also wanted to say if anybody sees people riding recklessly on my himiway rentals to notify me and they will be banned from renting immediately because im not going to allow that to happen.
The way they go through the stop signs, I'm surprised there hasn't been some bad accidents.
Electric scooters?
I’m glad the e-bike laws are finally being updated. I’ve seen kids flying down sidewalks and nearly causing multiple accidents on them.
Isn't there bigger issues in border town then this come on guys...
They need to stay off the walkways and obey the laws of the road. To many of them are just flying thru intersections and stop signs. And coming way to close and to fast to people that are walking.
